Why spliced wires should always be in a junction box

Anytime electrical wiring comes to an end or meets another line, there is a potential for hazard. Spliced wires are often warm and, when the union is not done properly it may even become hot.

While we don’t want to create unnecessary worry, we do want to make sure your home and building are safe. That’s why a metal junction box is recommended when lines are connected.

The metal contains the heat, keeping sparks away from flammable construction items like lumber and insulation. At the end of an electrical wire, say an electrical outlet or light switch, the outlet or switch box acts as the junction box, providing a layer of safety should the line become unsecured.

Fundamentally, securing and containing loose wires is critical. The National Electrical Code (NEC) states that no wiring splices are allowed outside of an approved enclosure.
